The Shapeways Community team knows that our community is global and an important part of building community is meeting, talking and sharing ideas face-to-face. This March we are covering a lot of ground across the United States and Europe and you can find us in five countries and thirteen different cities giving talks, hosting meetups, judging hackathons and leading workshops. Whether you are in Berlin or Los Angeles (or many places in between) we hope that you will connect with us this month – take a look at our events page and our meetup page for updated dates and locations.

To kick off our marathon month, Savannah Peterson, Director of Community at Shapeways gave a talk at the Gasparilla Interactive Festival, Tampa Bay’s showcase for cutting-edge technologies, digital innovation, and entrepreneurial inspiration, and served on a panel about women and millennials as entrepreneurs and innovators.

On March 8th we sponsored a Printathon at Brandeis University where our master of social media, Eric Ho, and customer service agent Andrew Thomas served as judges for the students projects. The event featured two Teams from Brandeis, one from UConn, one from Columbia and one from Waltham High School. The theme of the competition was social justice and students were encouraged to print products that can help humanity. The day was followed by a meet up with Voxel8, an electronics 3D printer.

I will be talking about funding your creative business and creative business models, plans and goals and will be talking a lot about business lessons from our Shapeways shop owners. I’ll also be hosting a meetup in the LA area on Wednesday, March 25 and a High Tech Meets Handmade Happy Hour in Ventura on Friday, March 27.

The final stop on my Irish, British and Scottish roadshow was ancient Edinburgh. A city as cloaked in history as it is moss. Scotland is a lovely country, making up the Northern UK territory and producing some of the best Whisky in the world, it has always been high on my list of travel destinations. Full disclosure, the original impetus for this roadshow had been a wedding I was asked to officiate in Edinburgh, and given the success of the Shapie community there it made sense to combine work and play. After making some great memories with my old college community, I was excited to see how Scottish Shapies got inspired! I spent Monday with the esteemed Vijay Paul of Dotsan and the evening meeting up with Steven Gray, Chris Dobson and Michael Inglis, three other incredibly talented Shapies. Not sure if it was the gloomy weather or tasty spirits, but Scotland greatly impressed me with the magic of its design culture.

If you’re interested in talking with any of the super friendly designers mentioned here, there is a specific forum thread dedicated to Scottish Shapies you can engage with here! You’re also encouraged to start threads for your own local or digital community.

Monday morning came with typical Scottish mist, limiting the amount we could shoot for a video series with Vijay Paul, the designer behind Dotsan. I had selected Vijay for a video because he has the ultimate Shapeways story. He is a self-dubbed “Digital Nomad;” a designer so successful through 3D Modeling and Shapeways that not only does he get to travel the globe and design from exotic locations (when we set up the shoot, he was in the foothills of the Himalayas), but he’s also had to hire a team of freelance designers to handle all the “designer for hire” work he gets. There will be more on Vijay when the videos we created together are ready, but suffice to say, he’s a great resource for design and entrepreneurial inspiration.

Michael Inglis was the first to arrive at Hollyrood 9a where we were having our meetup. He’s a notorious minifigure accessory designer on Shapeways, and his work has gone viral before. Admittedly, I was not expecting him to still be a student at University, but sure enough, he’s another example of a young and successful Shapie supplementing his income through his Shapeways shop. He’s created impressive products over the last year, and is looking to start experimenting with our API over the summer. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

Eggbot Cufflinks and Egg Cup by Steven Gray

Chris Dobson is an architect familiar in making and fabricating models and products using many materials. He’s just started dabbling in the Shop Owner space on Shapeways, but his mini (pictured below) and wired skull show a lot of promise. Chris uses Shapeways for work predominately, but we hope he continues to use it for play!

I have been following Steven Gray’s work since before I joined Shapeways. Not sure if it’s his need-finding or playful form that attracted me to his work in the first place, but regardless I was elated to see he’d brought a plethora of models. His lizard coasters were much larger than I’d assumed from the product shots, which was awesome (protip: always use a few points of reference for scale) and his eggbot cufflinks (pictured above the micro skull) as delightful as I’d anticipated!

He iterates until the product is perfect before posting it for sale in his shop, and the precision he uses during the day in construction management is echoed in practical and beautiful form of his models.

Scotland was truly magical. Perhaps it was the mist, or the flock of great designers, or the general fun and creative vibe, but it’s safe to say Edinburgh won a bit of my heart. I hope to see the Shapies in Scotland get together on their own more, and hopefully create more reasons for UK roadshows!

Galways was great, London was lovely, and Edinburgh was an exciting close to a fabulous trip. Thank to everyone who joined me along the road and those of you reading about the journey. Meetups are an incredible way to connect with our community and they’re a lot of fun! Interested in hosting one of your own or just want to talk to 3D Modelers in your area? Add your city to the Shapeways in your Community thread on the forum!

I’ll leave you with one final question, where should we go next?

After an inspiring meetup in Galway it was time to head to Big Ben and meetup with the London Shapeways Community. It was overcast and slightly misting when I arrived, in typical British form. 15 Shapies (and even some of their family) met me at The Riverside, on the South Side of the River Thames.

It was a pleasant variety of Shapies, many of them designers and engineers by day. Entrepreneurs, amateurs and some venerable members of the 3D Printing community came out and shared stories and Shapeways models. Many of the designers, like the one by Terry Wu featured above, were focused on making complete collections and iterating to perfection! Here are some highlights:

Corretta Singer, the recent winner of our Shapeways Olympics contest, happened to be in town from Jamaica and showed up with her family. It was great to get a chance to connect given that I’m not sure a Caribbean roadshow will be next on the list (but I’d like to plant that seed right now).

She really pushes the boundaries on our metal design guidelines and the results are stunning, especially on her scorpion ring!

I’ll be buying this ring of Corretta’s today, much more delicate than I initially thought having seen it on the site, but even more steampunk!

Matt Smith is a Designer and lover of great art and sculpture. He’s currently working on 3D Sculpting a collection of Art lost and damaged early in the 20th century. He is literally preserving lost art with new technology, doesn’t get much better than that!

Glenn Lewis is a designer in many mediums, and lately has been making beautiful jewelry using 3D Printing. It is some of the most refined work I’ve ever seen! We are lucky to call him a member of the Shapie family.

The design community in London is robust and full of talent, we look forward to more Shapeways crew lead events in the future! 5 hours later we all went home inspired and ready to keep 3D modeling! Can’t wait to see what everyone makes next.

London was lovely, but it was time to get back on the road and head to Edinburgh!

Where do you hope we’ll go next?

Top o’ the mornin’, Shapies! Have you been to the Emerald Isle or always yearned to go? After 3 days here in Galway, Ireland is quickly rising on my favorite travel destinations list. Beyond the gorgeous vistas, the people are unbelievably friendly!

There’s a robust community of Shapies here in Ireland and last night I had the pleasure of meeting up with six Irish 3D modelers! Much of this crew understood the importance of prototyping, printing their models in WSF before opting for one of our nice metals. Two of them even had at home printers that they iterate on before uploading to Shapeways.

Here are some examples of their work:

Stephen Best, a designer here in Galway, printed this seal from a commercial printer he did work on for a company in Australia.

Stephen prints at home on his Ultimaker 2 before he sends it to Shapeways. Resolution on home printers is fine, but seldom fantastic. As he made the jump to Shapeways, trying the model first in our WSF, he realized the translation from animation to physical product requires more polygons. He adjusted and then printed in FCS. The results are awesome! Side note for inspiration: the seal’s mouth is the escape hole!

Tycho Schenkeveld, a dutchman living in Galway (also interesting to note, only one attendee was born in Ireland, the rest had found their way to this glorious place through love and work). He modeled this dog for his “mum” as a present.

Tycho was smart and got user feedback even before printing, adjusting the model to have bigger ears after talking to

his aunt. After one reassuring pricing in WSF, he was ready to go for the gold plated steel. The results were awesome!

Paul Dunne, our true Irishman, is a product design student at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He’s a design thinker at heart, and is currently working on finding ways to use 3D Printing to enable the visually impaired, especially those affected later in life. His aspirations and work are incredible! I elected him to be our education and crew ambassador for Dublin last night, and I look forward to seeing the other designs he comes up with in solidworks. He had great insights and requests for tutorials on Shapeways side as well. We always love people pushing us to be better! Here’s a ball he did in both steel and elasto plastic (the bounce of the elasto was awesome!)

A very big thank you to everyone who came out in Galway last night, I can’t wait to see what else you all create; and come back for more Guinness!

Time to hit the road again this morning, next stop: London!

Cheers!

Savannah, your Shapeways vagabond.

Savannah, Shapeways roaming gnome here, and I’m hitting the road again! This time, for #ShapewaysRoadtrip part two, I’ll be in Galway, London and Edinburgh hosting meetups along the way. In addition to mingling, I am also looking to showcase designers who use Shapeways to power their businesses and enhance their lives. Send me an email, Savannah@Shapeways.com if you’re interested in being featured (and comfortable being on camera). Now, for the details:

Event Dates:

Galway, Ireland: Monday, March 24th

London, England: Wednesday, March 26th

Edinburgh, Scotland: Monday, March 31st

Locations: TBD!

Why? I learned on the Shapeways Roadtrip across America that Shapies know their cities best. I’m looking for leaders in each region (or just lovers of great pubs) to recommend spaces we can gather, show off models and share insights. Share your suggestions in the comments or email me with your suggestions.

What does it mean to to be featured in a Shapeways video? Two things: great advice and/or a great story. We’re amazed at what the Shapie community creates and we want to document it so we can inspire others. Some examples of videos we love: “Making of” ideation to creation journeys, “How to” tutorials that explain modeling in specific softwares, getting started with Shapeways etc., “Tips and Tricks” quick lists or brief videos showcasing what you’ve learned along the 3D printing way. We’ll be filming and documenting as much as we can along the road and look forward to meeting you all!

Let us know where to expect you in the comments (or email me) and we will be sure to let you know the details!

This is the final part in a four part series highlighting stops made along the first ever 3D Printing #ShapewaysRoadtrip across America. Over the last week, I visited Las Vegas, Denver and Chicago before a final and momentous stop in Cincinnati. Thank you all for following along on my journey; I look forward to the adventures yet to come!

The drive into Cincinnati brought refreshing humidity. The arid climate of the desert and Great Plains had dried both Martini and I out, and we welcomed the change as the trees grew taller and the hills rolled more dramatically.

Cincy is a delightful oasis in middle America. Quincy and Natalie, my co-conspirators and Shapie superstars 3DKitBash, had arranged our first meetup in the Northside at Happen Inc’s Toy Lab, an inspiring nonprofit dedicated to creative toy re-purposing. Cincinnati is steeped in toy history, Kenner started here, and the design ecosystem is delightfully play-centric. Tommy, product designer turned nonprofiteer and youth engager, and his team dismantle donated toys and sort them into bins. Children then can select seven recycled toy parts and assemble them (with the help of adults) into new unique creatures. These new toys are named, given super powers, and put up online at the end of the experience. Coming from traditional product design and having seen a lot of injection molded waste, I was incredibly inspired by the vision of Toy Lab and all of Happen, Inc.

The group was uniquely comprised as well. The most realistic R2D2 in the world made a cameo, alongside makers from ages seven to 70 who diligently took notes and asked questions. Conveniently, the Toy Lab had just received their first Ultimaker. The vibrant crowd huddled around it like a fire on a cold winter night after our discussion, ideas flowing like the Mississippi. Toy celebrities mingled with eager minds over pints with R2D2 (yes, he came to the bar after) into the am and everyone left inspired and full of new printable ideas. One lucky girl even got her first piece of 3D Printed jewelry, a bracelet made during my presentation!

The next morning, Nugg-it, a Cincy based wearable tech startup co-founded by dear friends of mine, Mike and Matt, hosted me at their co-working space, Cintrifuse, in the heart of downtown. Twenty five professionals “ooooh-ed” and “aww-ed” at the geometric jewelry I’d brought in over coffee. It was fun to talk with a crowd hyper-familiar with conventional product and manufacturing cycles.

Coffee turned into lunch with Quincy and R2D2’s handler, Chris, at an amazing hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurant. One of the most delightful aspects of Cincy is that everyone wants to share the history of the area. From toy sculpting, to the subway that never was, residents imparted local lore and wisdom here more so than anywhere else in the country; a sure sign I was much further east than when I began.

Quincy even fosters baby opossums, and his cat doubles as their surrogate. Seriously. The kindness of the Midwest is unparalleled. This goes for the media too, the Cincinnati Enquirer even covered my visit!

After lunch, I returned to my host lair downtown inspired and exhausted. Sipping a glass of champagne, pensively reflecting atop a beautiful Cincy rooftop Friday evening, my heart was full of love for our community and my mind full of ideas for the future. The feelings of gratitude I have for everyone who made this possible is overwhelming. You, yes you, are a beautiful, creative and dynamic group unlike any other I’ve had the good fortune to work with. Keep doing, making, designing, and pushing the boundaries of a newly 3D printed world.

There’s really no way to conclude an experience as epic as the first 3D Printing #ShapewaysRoadtrip across America, so I’ll leave you with this quote from Yogi Berra, “When you arrive at a fork in the road, take it.”

#ShapewaysRoadtrip signing off… for now :).

Last week I posted the first two parts in a four part series covering my 3D Printing road trip across America. After Las Vegas and Denver, I headed to Chicago for the biggest meetup of the trip to date. My final post on Cincinnati will come out tomorrow.

Four hours of sleep, 500 miles mapped out, and a full tank of gas in the minivan later, we hit the road running for The Second City. I kept Neil, my Chicago liaison, abreast of my progress throughout the day, as I closed in on the immaculately composed 3D Printer Experience, ran by the fabulous Julie Steele and her team in Chicago. When I arrived 10 minutes before show time, he was just as in awe as I was. Him at my timing, and me at the incredible display of 3D printed art– many examples of which were printed by Shapeways!

The piece above is printed by Shapeways and designed by Sophie Kahn. I suspect the feeling of awe and inspiration upon encountering Shapeways products in the wild will never wane, and this meetup was full of goodies. Julie even had an SLS machine sintering (think lasers and magic) as I was speaking! It was a serendipitous overlap of great people and technology in the heart of the Midwest.

The crowd in Chicago was large (in volume) and in charge. They were educated, came with few inquiries, but had multiple plans of action. Rather than questioning me on stage as the other groups preferred, they approached me by the sidelines with their plans for the future. This was a savvy group of makers and entrepreneurs, hungry to be a part of the next big thing. Julie was a gracious host, and it was fun to do an event with someone rooted deep in the Shapeways family. If you’re ever in Chicago, you must stop by the 3D Printer Experience, it’s right on the river and it rocks.

A quick skim of the hotels in downtown Chi-town and Martini and I decided to continue pressing on to Indiana. Little did we know, driving there is like driving on a racetrack. I don’t know if it’s culturally systemic given it’s racing heritage or what, but even at midnight their Indy skills dusted the Minivan. It was impressive. We tucked in for the night and dreamt of the future… and Cincinnati, our next stop.

This is part two in a four part series highlighting my 3D Printing #ShapewaysRoadtrip across America. Yesterday, I featured the Shapies of Las Vegas. Today is a recap of my stop in Denver, and my adventures in Chicago and Cincinnati are still in store.

Coming off a great first event, I was excited to meet with the Shapies of Denver. We had a refreshing number of folks from the area respond through our blog comments, and conveniently my point person there felt a local pub would make for the best meeting location. I certainly didn’t argue. If you haven’t ever driven a car through southern Utah and western Colorado, or seen a man on a motorcycle doing such, you must. The ethereal beauty of Moab, UT and the epic ascent through the Rockies is breathtaking.

The Denver crowd was delightfully engaged. A blend of Shop Owners, academics, and designers, specializing in movie props, realistic evolutionary animal skeletons, and gorgeous custom jewelry. They were full of suggestions and were proud of the maker community in Denver, where the first 3D printer brick and mortar store opened six months ago. They were excited for the future and offered up unique and valuable perspectives from the classroom and movie sets. Four and half hours of meetup later, we parted ways with hugs and smiles.

The drive through the Rockies had me entranced and itching for adventure outside the car. Derek, a friendly Denver Shapie and president of the design club at MSU Denver took me around Washington Park with Martini. Distracted by the sun and fun company, I didn’t get on the road until after 5 p.m. Under the cover of a darkness only achieved in the Great Plains, I made the insipid conquest of Nebraska to Omaha, just shy of the Iowa border.

When I arrived at 2:30 a.m. and presented my AAA card, Joe, the night manager, chuckled, “at this time of night, it’s a made up rate anyway darling. Breakfast is supposed to go out at 6 a.m., but I’m about to put it out if you want anything.” I was starving. After walking Martini, I headed to the buffet to refuel. We settled in for a brief nap before the rest of the 1,000 mile journey to Chicago, the subject of my next post from the road.

Last week I had the incredible fortune of meeting with Shapeways Shop Owners across America on my journey from my old Silicon Valley life in product design, to this new 3D printing chapter at Shapeways HQ in New York City. This is part one of a four part blog series highlighting the stops and makers I met with along the way in Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago and Cincinnati.

I left my temperate California home and garden in the sleepy Silicon Valley around happy hour on Saturday, June 1st. Hitting the road later than initially targeted, Martini (my 19lb rescue mutt co-pilot) and I pointed the minivan for Tehatchapi, the halfway point between the Bay and Sin City, the first stop on the #ShapewaysRoadtrip. Traveling with a dog, and literally every material possession I have, we were poised for the comedic adventure that lay ahead.

Waking up in the desert, I realized the travel information I’d received the night before was inaccurate, and subsequently I arrived in Sin City three minutes before the event was scheduled to start. I’d called ahead to warn Pawel, the host of my timeline, and took the 3 minutes of luxury to walk Martini, assuming that after 6 hours in the car she would need to relieve herself. She did not. Shocked by the 100+ degree temperatures of Nevada, she was clueless. Without a blade of grass in sight, she stared at me wagging her tail, confused but happy to be off the road.

There was a smiling group of empathetically sweaty makers packed in the SYN Shop in downtown Las Vegas. HyruleFoundry, a recent Zelda fan art success on Shapeways, was in attendance and after a gregarious discussion about where we are now and how Las Vegas is leveraging 3D Printing, told his story of success on the marketplace. The creators of Las Vegas were full of questions and ideas, continuing the discussion over pints at the Gold Spike casino across the street afterwards, and pleasantly prolonging my drive to southern Utah that evening. SYN Shop even had a retro powder printer they were in the process of restoring, all in all a very refreshing and empowered group of hackers!

Back on the road zipping through the desert (literally- Utah is the only state I’ve enjoyed 80mph speed limits in), I felt the first #ShapewaysRoadtrip dose of warm-fuzzies. There is something truly magical going on in downtown Las Vegas; Tony Hseih’s incredible personal investment into the entrepreneurial ecosystem of a city written off as a weekend getaway is as impressive as it is inspiring. Pete, our CEO, and I have both had the opportunity to workshop and discuss the future of the project with the #dtlv community and look forward to working more with the makers and masterminds in the future. If you haven’t left the strip in Vegas, you are truly missing out.

Be sure and check back for more #ShapewaysRoadtrip adventures with Martini and I as we make our way from the desert to the Rockies.
Hi Shapies!

I’m Savannah, the latest addition to the Shapeways Marketing team. I’ll be splitting my time here between social media management and Shop Owner education.

I’m honored to be working with such a talented community of designers, Shop Owners and customers, so much so in fact, that I’m plotting the first Shapeways Roadtrip across America!

This means I can meet with you along my journey from San Francisco to headquarters in NYC! It’s such an inspiring time in 3D printing and I can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to; most importantly listen and learn how I can help you achieve whatever your Shapeways-powered dreams may be. I’m really excited to dive into the heartland and see how you are using Shapeways between Silicon Valley and Silicon Alley.

So now the question is:

Do you live somewhere between San Francisco and New York City?

Would you like to be a part of the first ever Shapeways 3D Printing road trip?!

Tell me where to stop on Twitter @shapeways or here in the comments, how many to expect and I’ll do my best to make it happen! You can also email Savannah@shapeways.com with your ideas if you don’t feel like putting them on blast.

It’s my goal to stop a hybrid of Midwestern metropolis and splendid small town Americana, so don’t be shy, let me know where to stop and I’ll see you on the road!

Not on our path? No worries! Follow along on the blog and via #ShapewaysRoadtrip

And since I’m new and I’m asking to meet you in real life you can find me at @SavIsSavvy on Twitter/IG/Vine/Shapeways and on LinkedIn. Don’t be shy, say hi! Thanks for the invites in advance!

Cheers to creating a great future together,
